Adult day services provide older adults with a safe, social and helpful environment designed to increase physical, emotional and cognitive function for participants. Based in the local community, adult day services enable older adults to stay home for as long as possible.

Adult day services is a professional and cost effective alternative for providing home community-based care for Virginians needing personal care, medical or medication assistance, and supervision during the day while family caregivers work or have respite from the demands of caregiving.

Also known as adult day care, it applies to a variety of programs offered in a group setting for adults who need supervision, care and support during the daytime. Usually for an older adult population, services include therapeutic recreation, socialization, health and nutrition monitoring, supervision for safety, and assistance with activities of daily living. Additional services, such as, rehabilitation, may be provided on site or referred out to community providers.
